Procedure information

Modern otoplasty - the only method available for the elimination of congenital and acquired defects of the outer ears. The problems associated with this aesthetic flaw are a concern for many people starting from childhood. But it’s not so easy for everyone to decide on ear surgery. Fear of surgical intervention outweighs the psychological complexes that can arise as a result of this aesthetic defect.

Fortunately, medical science has made significant advancements in the area of otoplasty and plastic surgery as a whole. Today, many problems can be solved quickly and easily. The cutting-edge methods of ear surgery used at the GrandMed plastic surgery clinic make it possible to eliminate these types of defects effectively, safely and completely pain-free.

In which cases is otoplasty indicated, and what problems can it help solve?

The current level of advancement of otoplasty makes it possible to eliminate:

  • sticking-out ears;
  • post-traumatic or congenital deformation of the outer ears;
  • asymmetry of the ears or their large size;
  • deformation of the lobes (piercing, disks, etc.);

Otoplasty is indicated in the case of the absence of part or all of the outer ear.
As you can see, today’s otoplasty is capable of correcting virtually any changes to the ears. Aesthetic or acquired defects of an aesthetic nature, as well as those resulting from otolaryngological disease or injury, can be corrected by the ear surgery performed at GrandMed.
The GrandMed clinic also performs corrective surgery on the ear lobes. The corrective method is chosen depending on the size of the hole, as determined during a physical exam. If the issue is the holes left after wearing disks, the holes can’t be stitched up because the tissue has been overstretched, and surgery is performed (change in the relative positioning of the soft tissue) with the formation of the correct shape of the lobe.

From what age can ear surgery be performed - what are the age restrictions?

Ear surgery can be performed at any age starting at age 6: modern technology makes it possible to eliminate the aesthetic defects of the outer ears on even the youngest patients. If your child has problems in this area, otoplasty can help solve them quickly and without consequences.
Corrected physical defects mean a qualitative life change for the better. And it’s not just psychological comfort that’s at issue. In some cases, otoplasty is capable of preventing a deterioration of blood flow in this area and even poor hearing, which can occur as a result of deformation of the ears or their incorrect shape. That’s why it’s so important to look after reconstructing the natural shape of the ears and undergo plastic surgery as soon as possible, without waiting for the emergence of physiological or psychological problems.

Ear lobe surgery:

In the case of overstretched ear lobes due to earrings, a minor out-patient operation is performed under local anesthetic that results in elimination of the long linear hole through the stitching of micro-sutures. They are removed 6 days later. A small hole is left for wearing earrings.

Contraindications for otoplasty

Plastic surgery to change the shape of the ears - otoplasty - is not performed in the following cases:

  • acute cold-related illness or serious somatic disease;
  • heart-valve defects and pancreatic diabetes;
  • chronic ear infections;
  • blood-clotting problems;
  • oncological disease.
  • Additionally, ear surgery is not recommended for women during menstruation. There are no other contraindications to the performance of otoplasty.

The operation

As with any surgical intervention, ear surgery requires careful preparation. The patient must have a consulting exam with the ENT specialist and the surgeon. A number of analytical tests are also run: general urinalysis, HIV screening, testing for syphilis and the antibodies for hepatitis B and C.

Operation mechanism

The operation is performed under local anesthesia, so the patient doesn’t require hospitalization. An experienced plastic surgeon is capable of performing ear surgery in 1.5 hours. A small incision is made on the posterior wall of the outer ear. Then, the physician gives the cartilage the needed shape and returns the ear to its normal position. The minimal size of the incision made in otoplasty means that the microscopic sutures will be completely unnoticeable. That said, you’ll be completely satisfied with the shape the surgeon gives your ears.

Rehabilitation after otoplasty

Cartilage recovers very quickly, so the rehabilitation period after otoplasty isn’t long. Special bandages must be worn for the first few days after surgery. In the subsequent period (for about a month), these bandages must be worn while sleeping to ensure that the outer ears remain secure and in place. The slight pain experienced after ear surgery can be easily treated with analgesics. The microsutures left after otoplasty are removed in 10-12 days. If you have long hair that conceals post-operative symptoms, you can resume your normal lifestyle in 1-2 days (if you have short hair - in a couple of weeks).

Possible complications

Today, ear surgery is a completely safe operation. It can’t impact hearing or cause any other complications. Problems can only occur after otoplasty if the patient doesn’t follow the rehabilitation plan.
A responsible approach and medical supervision provide an absolute guarantee of the successful result of ear surgery, and the slight inconvenience of the rehabilitation period is a small price to pay for the aesthetic effect that will last a lifetime!

Otoplasty prices

The cost of the operation can range, depending on the specific type of ear surgery required. Eliminating sticking-out ears, asymmetry and other defects can be accomplished by an array of different technologies. At the consultation, the physician and patient work together to determine the optimal methods for performing otoplasty, which must:

  • take into consideration all medical indicators;
  • fully meet the patient’s expectations in terms of the future shape of the ears.

That’s why a physician consultation is needed to determine the final price of otoplasty. In any case, we guarantee everyone who comes to our clinic that their ear surgery will be performed effectively and absolutely safely. Schedule a consultation right now, and your problem will be solved in no time!
