Asian eyes

Doctors

One of the most popular areas of plastic surgery in recent decades has been blepharoplasty of Asian eyes — a set of operations intended to change their shape. The aspiration of many Asians to look “more European” is predicated on a whole range of factors, which certainly include both aesthetic and socio-cultural considerations — on both sides of the Atlantic, opportunities to land a prestigious job and be promoted are relatively greater among people in the “European-looking” category. The popularity of surgery for Asian eyes is growing - both in Russia and in the CIS.

Unique features of the Asian eye shape

The shape of the Asian eye is distinctive in terms of three main peculiarities.

  • First, it’s the absence or slight expression of the double fold of the upper eyelid (supraorbital fold) typical of the European eye.
  • Second, the presence of adipose-tissue deposits in the upper and lower eyelid (so-called fat bulges). The combination of these two factors often makes the upper eyelid virtually unnoticeable and intensifies the effect of narrowness, while Asian culture traditionally views ideal beauty as eyelids with a double fold.
  • The third important feature is the presence of a distinctive crease in the inner corner of the eye — epicanthus, which covers the tear duct.

Based on the foregoing, blepharoplasty for Asian eyes may encompass an entire range of procedures to “Europeanize” the appearance, or just certain manipulations such as upper-lid surgery, which is the most popular.

Surgical technique

The procedure to correct Asian eyes is performed under both general and local anesthesia. In the event of the formation of supraorbital folds, some of the skin is excised with the removal of a certain amount of adipose tissue. Excess tissue is removed through lid incisions along the eyelash line. The height of the sculpted fold is determined based on the specifics of the shape of the eyes and the patient’s wishes - overall, it can reach up to 10 mm from the edge of the eyelashes.

Smoothing of the epicanthus is performed according to the same technique. Excision of the skin is performed medially; that said both the excess fatty tissue of the upper lid and part of the round eye muscle are removed.
Under the removal of fatty deposits on the upper and lower lids, excess tissue is removed through incisions on the inside of the lid or directly under the lash line.

Recommendations for the post-operative period

As a rule, operating time doesn’t exceed 1.5-2 hours. The patient is admitted to the clinic for the first 24 hours after the operation. The rehabilitation period is 1-2 weeks; that said, for the first week the patient wears patches at the excision sites. For the first 3 days after the operation, antibacterial eye-drops are administered and cold compresses are performed. Makeup and contact lenses should not be worn for two weeks. During this time, the eyes should be protected by wearing sunglasses.
