Face-lift

Doctors

Today’s modern advances of therapeutic and injection cosmetology have at their disposal a wide array of methods that help delay that fateful day when you can’t help but admitting that your youth has passed. And if your faded facial contours have become a complex for you - know that plastic surgery can offer a solution to the problem that will exceed expectations and let you travel 10 years back in time!

Gravitational aging of the face

The face is a highly-dynamic area of the body, supported by roughly two dozen muscle pairs. Throughout the day, they’re in perpetual motion: we talk, eat, smile and express various emotions. This is the source of the first expression lines. On top of that, diminishing tissue elasticity and the laws of gravity cannot be overcome. The speed and intensity of these processes are also influenced by nature - genetics, the density and dryness of the skin, as well as the quality of facial skincare. Depending on all of these factors, 45 is roughly a good age to start thinking about a dramatic approach to solving the problem. The impact of time on our skin can’t be stopped. But it’s always possible to turn back time. The main thing is to choose the right treatment and entrust your face to the steady hands of experienced cosmetologists and plastic surgeons.

Face-lift operation

A face-lift requires a high degree of professionalism on the part of the plastic surgeon, who must expertly determine the extent of the required lift depth and precisely perform all of the manipulations without hitting nerves and important muscles. The guiding principle of aesthetic surgery is first do no harm, which is why the choice of clinic and plastic surgeon is extremely important. Weighing in favor of a particular physician would be the number of similar operations he performs on a regular basis. The plastic surgeons at the GrandMed clinic perform face-lifts every day. Patient age ranges from 30 to 80. The face-lift technique makes it possible to comprehensively eliminate all age-related changes on the face, neck and decollete area.

S.Shvyrev: “I saw my first face-lift operation in the USA in 1993. After the operation, the physician didn’t bandage the sutures, which was a shock to me and my colleagues. But it soon became clear that in this case, bandaging would only have complicated aftercare for the suture line. I’ve been performing deep lift operations for more than 20 years and I always explain to my patients that a bandage isn’t necessary. To those worried that the result of the operation won’t be kept in place by the miniature stitches without a bandage around the face, I explain that what’s holding it in place isn’t the stitches but the newly-formed subcutaneous support structure.”

Modern face-lift

Unlike in the recent past, when face-lifts were only performed by way of stretching the skin, today’s deep lift first and foremost envisions the repositioning of subcutaneous layers of tissue. That said, a musculo-facial structure is formed (much like the armature worn under clothes), which makes it possible to maintain the result of the operation for the patient’s entire life. A face-lift can be performed in combination with lipofilling - the injection of the patient’s own subcutaneous fat to restore lost volume to the face. Lifting of the lower part of the face can be performed at the same time as an upper lift, known as eyebrow correction. A face-lift results not only in the elimination of age-related changes to the face, but congenital defects as well - implants can be put on the chin to correct its shape, or to fix a “teardrop” deformation of the chin.

How a face-lift is performed:

A face-lift is performed under anesthetic, and the operation lasts several hours. Incisions are made in parts of the scalp and along the line of the outer ears. They repeat the anatomical contours of the ears, and are subsequently completely unnoticeable. Today’s modern suture materials make it possible to stitch the wounds so tightly that you can resume all of the necessary hygienic routines on the very next day after the operation.

After a face-lift operation:

Visual rejuvenation occurs differently for everyone. Plastic surgeons have noted that for those with narrow faces and dry skin, rejuvenation tends to be more pronounced than for those with round, full faces. This happens because aging also occurs more abruptly for those in the first category. But in general, if an operation to correct the eyebrows and upper part of the face leaves you looking refreshed, a deep face-lift will have everyone noticing your total rejuvenation. And crucially — the naturalness of your renewed appearance won’t
give away the fact that you’ve had an operation. Hematomas and puffiness in the suture area after a deep face-lift won’t be as significant as after a skin lift. This is because the subcutaneous layer is repositioned together with the skin, and this repositioning leaves fewer traces. Sensations after the operation are likely to include some discomfort, as well as partial numbing of the skin in front of the outer ears. For the first little while after the operation, the tightening of the muscles may make it problematic to open your mouth widely. But over time, all of these natural sensations return. In order to accelerate recuperation after the operation, it is recommended to use professional cosmetics and follow a course of procedures encouraging the reduction of swelling and hematomas, the restoration of sensitivity and the return of normal blood flow to the tissue. Normal lifestyle can be resumed in 7–12 days. But initially, it’s still very important to take special care of your skin, stay away from the sauna and banya, avoid sun exposure and limit physical exertion.

Alternatives to a face-lift:

For patients aged 34-40 with age-related skin changes that aren’t particularly pronounced, an alternative in the form of an endoscopic lift may be suggested. In this case, the operation is performed with minimal trauma to the tissue.  Incisions are made inside the mouth and on the scalp.  The recovery period is shorter than in the case of a deep lift. The result of the operation lasts for 5-7 years. The operation has specific contraindications depending on facial type. For those not quite ready for surgical intervention yet, there’s a rejuvenation technology known as the Ulthera System. The ultrasound wave makes it possible to impact not only the skin, but the subcutaneous muscle layer of the face, neck and decollete as well. The procedure is performed under local analgesic and entails no recovery. The only “but”: age-related changes to the skin must be properly evaluated. In the event of significant changes, the effect may not live up to your expectations.
